Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Don’t go flush against walls — Even 3 inches of space changes how the room breathes and flows.
- Avoid oversized arms in tight spaces — Bulky arms block sight lines and make narrow rooms feel more confined.
- Skip the wrong scale — A sofa too large dwarfs your room; too small fails to anchor it. Measure wall length first, then apply the two-thirds guideline.
- Don’t crowd circulation — Ensure clear pathways around all sides; overcrowding kills functionality no matter how beautiful the piece.
For compact side surfaces, I prefer smaller tables at 18 to 24 inches wide, occasional rounds at 15 to 18 inches diameter, or nesting tables that tuck away when unneeded.
